Roar season finale was the Greatest Ball

The 2018 Cambridge Roar Festival enjoyed a glorious season finale on Saturday night with The Greatest Ball at the Quy Mill Hotel and Spa. A crowd of three hundred guests were treated to a spectacle of magic and circus acts, including a sword swallower, headless lady and contortionist. There were a series of exceptional dance shows from Miss G’s Academy of Performing Arts, a sumptuous three-course dinner and a band plus DJ set. Compere for the evening mid-morning presenter Chris Mann from BBC Radio Cambridgeshire was joined on stage by BBC colleague Candice Ball and Cambridge United football legend, John (Shaggy) Taylor. South Cambridgeshire’s Conservative MP Heidi Allen and her husband Phil made a surprise donation to the auction, which raised £1,600 on its own. From the Labour benches of Cambridge City Council former Mayor Councillor Rob Dryden also played a part in the raffle draw. MP Heidi Allen commented:

“This was my first Roar event. And what an event it was! Everything from the entertainment to the food and drink were perfectly executed. I was so pleased that we were able to help in some way to support the amazing charities supported by the Roar; Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, East Anglian Air Ambulance, and Cambridge United Community Trust. Thank you, Cambridge Roar. We had a ball!”

Chris Mann, who has been involved with the not-for-profit Roar as a non-executive Director for the last two years, said:

“The 2018 Roar has been yet another fantastic success with funds raised bringing the total amount since the Festival began past the £100,000 mark. That is something for Tony Murdock and everyone connected to the Roar to feel massively proud of. Every year, the Roar goes from strength to strength and Saturday night had to be the pinnacle so far. For me, the most important thing is that this is local people raising money for local charities. It’s about helping people in our own community, in our own area, who really need it. All three of our main charities rely on nights like this to help them do what they do.”

Whilst the Greatest Ball was by far one of the highlights of the 2018 season, the other seven events were also a huge hit with local people and businesses, with more than 2,000 guests attending events from the Football Heroes and Champagne dinners, to the Business Games and Afternoon Tea.

I never knew how far it would go when I first came up with the concept of creating a festival that gave 100% of its profits to charity. Here at the Roar, everyone is deeply committed to supporting charities that help people in our local communities in a variety of ways. In the current climate, it is more important than ever that these charities continue to receive this support. I’m deeply honoured by the generosity of everyone involved, from the sponsors and hosts, to the performers and the thousands of people who have attended events since 2014. Every year, we aim to be bigger, better, bolder and Saturday night was probably one of our best events yet. However, 2019 also has a few surprises in store, so watch this space!”

The Greatest Ball was one of eight Roar Festival events taking place between 18th May and 22nd September 2018.
Now in its fourth year, the Roar is the only Festival of its kind in the region. The Festival raises money for local charities by staging a series of high-profile events, from glamourous dinners and glitzy balls to corporate games and boxing matches. 100% of the profits from these events are split between the chosen charities. Alongside providing a wide range of fun events for everyone to enjoy, the Roar also creates opportunities for businesses to network, entertain clients and reward staff.
